Seam Carving GUI is a GUI front end to CAIR, an implementation of Arial Shamir's seam carving algorithm (aka content aware image resizing, aka Image Retargeting). Using it, you can resize images without distorting them. It works by automatically detecting "seams" - paths of minimal change from one end to another, and then eliminating them from the final image. It also shows you the energy density of your image, so you can manually mark the regions to keep and the ones to remove (but it's usually not necessary).
The result is a resized photo that appears very natural and does not have any artifacts or distortions. It is a very useful feature if you need to resize an image with important details. It is especially useful for photos with human faces. However, it is not perfect: it may need to rely on user-provided information (i.e. painting the regions which are to be preserved) to reduce errors. It is also not a good choice for photos with complex scenes, and it doesn't work well with transparent elements (e.g. logos).
If you want to try out content-aware resizing for yourself, this is the program to use. It is very simple to use: open an image, paint in green the parts which you want to preserve, and red the ones you want to get rid of. Then process the image and be amazed by the results.
